The plan
Italy has given the go-ahead for the construction of a bridge over the Strait of Messina, which will directly connect mainland Calabria with Sicily. The project, expected to be completed around 2032–2033, aims to reduce travel time for the crossing from several hours (by ferry) to approximately 15 minutes by car or train. This bridge will bring the island closer to the rest of Italy (both literally and economically) and create new opportunities for property investors.
Promising areas
- Messina and surroundingsEspecially Torre Faro, Ganzirri and coastal villages towards Taormina, but actually the entire north/east coast benefit from better accessibility for commuters and short holidays.
- Tourist rental: Expect growth in weekend tourism from the mainland, making short-stay rentals more profitable.
- Mid-rent and student market: Affordable flats near public transport hubs and universities can achieve higher occupancy rates.
- Logistics property: The combination of road and rail on the bridge makes locations near ports and industrial clusters more attractive for storage and distribution.
- Camping and outdoorsThe bridge makes it much easier for motorhomes, caravans and tent travellers to reach Sicily without ferry planning or high crossing costs. Coastal regions with good road connections and nature access, in particular, such as the north coast near Milazzo, the Aeolian Islands as a base, and the eastern part around Etna, can benefit from a growing demand for spacious, well-equipped campsites.
In short
In the long term, the bridge could provide structural growth in demand for real estate, particularly in Northeast Sicily. Those who make strategic choices now, whether in urban rentals, tourist short-stays, logistics or campsites, can benefit from rising demand and higher incomes once the connection is operational.
